Why does a roof-terminated dryer vent clog faster than a sidewall one?

Gravity. Lint has to climb the whole run. In two-story subdivisions that run is often 20–35 ft with two or more elbows, and whatever the blower cannot push out drops back down the pipe. It collects at the base of the vertical and at every elbow. Houston humidity makes it worse. Damp lint packs into a wet felt lining instead of dry fluff, and a brush has to shear it off the wall.

The roof cap is the second half of the problem. Screened caps catch pine needles and oak catkins on top of the lint. Birds and wasps nest in roof and gable terminations. So do squirrels. We clear the cap from above and brush the run, then vacuum at the dryer end so debris has somewhere to go.

Attic sections get checked while we are there. Disconnected joints dumping hot moist air into insulation are common and feed mildew long before anyone notices.

Long attic-to-roof runs want clearing every 6–9 months. Most single-family homes, annually.

Cleaning is the wrong call if the cap is a flimsy louvered screen or the duct is crushed foil. Those re-clog within months. Replace the termination first.
